Preparing your mouth before placing a dental prosthesis (dentures) is referred to as pre-prosthetic surgery.
Some patients require minor oral surgical procedures prior to receiving dentures to make them as comfortable as possible. Dentures sit on your bone ridge, so it is vital for the bone to have the proper size and shape. When a tooth needs to be extracted, the bone underneath may be sharp and uneven. In order for the denture to fit optimally, we may need to smooth down or reshape the bone. In some instances, we may also have to remove excess bone before your dentures are placed.
Pre-Prosthetic Surgery Options
You may require one or more of the following procedures to prepare your mouth for dentures:
Bone smoothing and reshaping
Removal of excess bone
Bone ridge reduction
Removal of excess gum tissue
Removal of impacted teeth
